And I never said that admirable women couldn’t canonically be lesbians, I was pointing out the perverse way that fandom considers “being rewritten as LGBT” an honor that only good characters deserve to have bestowed on them.

I said nothing of the sort.

I was merely pointing out that fandom has a tendency to turn canonically straight characters gay.

I never implied that the hypothetical “Undertale Prime” was a superior game, merely a more typical one.

However, it is my view that Undertale is, in essence, a non-fanfic work nonetheless crammed full of fanfic tropes, to the point where it feels like a work of fanfic itself.

This being the case, it’s hard not to see the presence of LGBT characters in Undertale as “oh, there’s the shipping.”

What I’m trying to get at is there’s a difference between “a romantic subplot” and “a fanon ship retroactively made canon”, and the gay romances in Undertale felt like the latter more than the former, even though they weren’t, and that’s the issue.

LGBT Characters aren’t bad, clumsy metatextuality is bad.

Like, is anyone really excited for the next truckload of blockbusters? It feels like Endless Pasta at Olive Garden when your parents take you there. It might feel good on a scratch-an-itch kind of level, but you’re not excited about it.
